What is Formula SAE?
Formula SAE stands for the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers design competition. The Society of
Automotive Engineers (SAE) is an organization of auto makers dedicated to advancing mobility
engineering worldwide. Over the course of one year each team creates a scaled-down formula-style car to
be tested against entries from schools throughout the country and even from other countries.
What is Formula SIUE?
Formula SIUE is a student organization from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville dedicated to
enhancing our education through hands on application. Over the course of the year our engineering and
managerial skills will be put to the test while valuable lessons in machining, fabrication, design, finance,
and especially teamwork will provide students with knowledge and experience that cannot be gained in
the classroom or from a textbook.
What kind of competition is this?
The FSAE Competition will be held at the Virginia International Raceway April 23-26, 2008, where 50
international teams compete in a variety of static and dynamic events. Static events include innovation in
design, cost analysis, and product presentation while dynamic events test the vehicles acceleration,
braking, endurance, and fuel economy. The competition is held under the watchful eye of its major
supporters such as Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Daimler-Chrysler and the Society of
Automotive Engineers and gains huge media attention at the national and international level.
